Driving Inclusion through Technology: Insights from the 6th Global Takaful & Re-Takaful Forum 2024

On September 9th, 2024, industry leaders, innovators, and professionals gathered at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Dubai for the 6th Global Takaful & Re-Takaful Forum, one of the most anticipated events for the Takaful and Re-Takaful sectors. This forum has become a prominent platform for discussing the future of Islamic insurance, and this year’s edition was no exception.

I had the privilege of being invited as a speaker, where I presented on a crucial topic, “Leveraging Technology to MAKE Insurance Inclusive.” As we navigate an ever-changing digital landscape, it’s essential to address how technology can be harnessed to create accessible and inclusive insurance solutions, especially in markets that are largely underserved.

The Growing Need for Inclusive Insurance

Globally, approximately 90% of the population remains underserved or uninsured by traditional insurance mechanisms. This presents a critical challenge for insurers and intermediaries, especially in emerging markets where economic vulnerabilities are high. Takaful, as an ethical and Sharia-compliant insurance model, is uniquely positioned to close these gaps, but it needs technological transformation to scale and deliver on its promise of inclusivity.

At the forum, there was a consensus on the significant role that Insurtech and Digital Transformation can play in reshaping the insurance ecosystem. Technology, when applied effectively, can simplify the development, deployment, and distribution of insurance products tailored for the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Key Takeaways from the Presentation

In my presentation, I delved into the transformative potential of Insurance-Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IIaaS) and how platforms like B4E Insurtech are building solutions for insurance providers to design, deploy, and launch simple, rule-based products that are scalable and accessible to all.

1. Digitization and Automation: Automating traditional insurance processes allows for cost reduction and scalability, making micro-insurance products more feasible for low-income populations. Through the use of AI, data analytics, and smart contracts, insurers can reduce administrative burdens and enhance risk management.

2. Mobile Accessibility: In many underserved regions, mobile phones are the primary access point to financial services. Leveraging mobile technology to deliver insurance products—particularly microinsurance—ensures that the hardest-to-reach individuals can be included.

3. Blockchain and Smart Contracts: By using blockchain technology, insurance providers can offer more transparency and efficiency in the claims process, reducing fraud and ensuring swift payouts, which is critical for communities that rely on insurance for their livelihood.

4. Partnerships for Scale: Collaboration between insurers, MGAs, and tech firms is essential to ensure that digital infrastructure is set up to support these innovations. At B4E Insurtech, we emphasize partnerships that enable insurance providers to tap into advanced technologies without significant capital investment.

The Role of Takaful in Driving Inclusive Insurance

Takaful is inherently inclusive, as it is based on mutual cooperation and solidarity. However, to scale effectively, Takaful operators must embrace digital solutions. The event underscored how modernizing the Takaful sector with innovative, tech-driven models can help expand the reach of Islamic insurance.

For instance, the development of peer-to-peer (P2P) Takaful platforms was highlighted, showing how such platforms can improve trust and transparency among participants while minimizing operational costs. Moreover, regulatory support and governance structures will be essential in ensuring that these digital innovations adhere to Sharia principles while enhancing inclusivity.

A Bright Future for Inclusive Insurance

As technology continues to evolve, so too will the opportunities for Takaful and insurance providers to serve the underserved. Events like the Global Takaful & Re-Takaful Forum are crucial in bringing together the minds and resources necessary to drive change.

At B4E Insurtech, we are committed to enabling insurers to innovate and expand their reach. By leveraging technology, we believe we can make insurance accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, and deliver on the promise of financial protection for all.

Conclusion

The 6th Global Takaful & Re-Takaful Forum 2024 was a significant event for discussing the future of the Takaful industry and its potential for inclusivity. It was an honor to share our thoughts on how technology can be the key enabler in realizing this vision. By continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation, the Takaful and insurance industry can evolve to serve billions of people globally, contributing to a more equitable and secure world.
